An Iconic Legacy

There was a lot of excitement as our Modern Icons ‘sip’n’sculpt’ group put the finishing touches on their clay masterpieces last week.

After an opening workshop crafting their crosses out of clay, sculpting designs and painting ready for the kiln, the second workshop saw participants getting crafty with ribbons, feathers, tassels and more. It would be fair to say, there was a lot of bedazzling going on!

In addition to taking home an icon for themselves, participants left behind a second cross to form part of an installation piece for the College. Our Head of Visual Arts was most impressed and is looking forward to unveiling the artwork soon!

Debutants in Winning Form

Our Boys’ First XI Soccer team is tracking well this season, especially given that many team members are in their debut year of the Division 1 competition.

A fantastic 5-3 win against Prince Alfred College last week was a highlight, bringing their accumulative results to three wins, three losses.

Yesterday’s victory over Immanuel College
(4-1) was another great performance.

Keep up the great work, boys!

World Peace Unlocked

It came down to the final minutes for our Year 5s conducting the World Peace Game last week, but in the end they got their win!

Navigating global negotiations and international diplomacy, it was a big final push to balance the finances of all countries, and reduce environmental impact.  The elation from students when they realised their success was a delight to see.

Congratulations to all involved on tackling this challenge - a fantastic 'hands on' exercise for problem solving, compromise and negotiation.

All great life skills!

Wear a Beanie, Support a Cause

It’s that time of the year, when you need to dig out your colourful and zany beanies, in time for our 2025 Beanie Day - next Friday, 20 June (Week 8).

This year, Beanie Day falls on World Refugee Day, so all gold coin donations collected on this day will go towards the Mercy charity, Circle of Friends Australia, in support of asylum seekers and refugees.

Thankfully the recent cold snap makes wearing beanies a regular thing! We can’t wait to see yours on display next week.

A Case of Identity

It was all hands on deck last week as our Year 9 students explored forensic science in the hunt for a killer.

Using a fictional murder scene, students investigated physical and digital evidence in an effort to uncover the identity of the killer, uncovering shoe imprints, DNA found at the scene, trauma patterns on the victim and CCTV footage.

This incursion was highly effective, with students putting theoretical learning into practice in an engaging, collaborative manner. It was also something a little bit different for our students and maybe planted the seed for future careers in criminology or pathology.

Shining Silver

A big congratulations to Isaac (Year 9, Barry), whose achievements on the national Judo stage continue.

This week, Isaac returned from the Gold Coast, where he represented South Australia in the 2025 Australian National Judo Championship, where more than 600 other athletes took part.

At the end of competition, Isaac took home the Silver Medal in the Under 60kg Cadet Division, and has been selected to represent Australia at the 2025 Hong Kong Asian Cup, and Macau Asian Cup next month.

Thank You

This week, we celebrated South Australian Volunteers Day with a morning tea with some of our dedicated College Volunteers.

Whether it's helping with excursions, reading with students or being part of our Student Mentor Programme, we value the contributions of all our volunteers and look forward to seeing more of you in and around the Campus this year.

If you’re interested in volunteering with the College, there are three easy steps to get involved.

A Reflective First

Now that our Year 6s are part of the Middle School,  they got to experience their first Reflection Day.

Held at The Monastery, students participated in activities designed to build relationships, whilst unpacking Compassion and Mercy. They also practised respectful negotiation skills through a global trade game, and mindfulness by creating affirmation stones.

This important day was concluded with a Liturgy and a peaceful walk back to Campus.

Student Wellbeing

Student wellbeing is woven into everything we do at Mercedes College, and thanks to the Commonwealth Government’s National Student Wellbeing Programme, we have been able to bring on Kiah Wyman as our Student Wellbeing Officer.

Rather than a counselling or Chaplaincy role, Kiah undertakes a variety of ‘Mercy in Action’ initiatives that follow the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’ preventative health model.

Her background in studying justice and societies, work in care and community settings, as well as her experience in our Student Mentoring Programme, gives Kiah a great foundation from which to connect with students, raise their voice, agency, and engagement in activities that will support their good mental health and wellbeing.

Kiah will be on Campus each Monday and Thursday for the remainder of 2025.
