The Hedge
Week 6, Term 3 | Thursday 28 August 2025 A weekly snippet of what’s happening ‘behind the hedge’ at Mercedes College...

Mercedes Victorious in Intercol XXI

It was a hard-fought battle filled with exceptional demonstrations of good sportsmanship and mutual respect, and Mercedes College ended the week winning Intercol 11 shields to 10 for the second year in a row!

At the time of the Week 5 edition of the Hedge, we were narrowly ahead 7 shields to 6, with eight more opportunities ahead of us.

Our motley crew of Hockey players gave it everything in our last Intercol competition in this sport, and conceded the shield to St Ignatius, levelling the scores.

On Friday evening, our Open A Table Tennis team couldn't quite win their shield, but in promising signs for next year, we did win the exhibitional Music competition - being voted best performance in two of three categories, including Battle of the Bands. We can't wait to compete for a shield in this competition in 2026!

Rounding out the week, our remaining Soccer teams and Football teams took to the field and we took home shields for the Open B Boys' Soccer, Boys' Second XVIII Football and Girls' Football, meaning that the last game of the competition would determine the final result... well done to our Boys' First XVIII Football team for withstanding that pressure and bringing home the final shield!

Congratulations to everyone who competed, attended competitions, showed their support with Camel scarves, or sent well-wishes to our teams.

Next year we're back to playing host, and look forward to creating a dominating atmosphere all around Campus!

Go Camels!

What an Adventure!

Book Week was a fantastic adventure, celebrating storytelling and fostering a love of reading that we all share.

Friday was the ever-anticipated Book Week Parade, with all students and staff encouraged to dress up for the occasion.

Our Reception to Year 6 students went all-out and took their creativity and colour right around Campus, bathing in the applause and cheers of their older peers.

Well done to everyone for embracing this wonderful annual event, we're already looking forward to learning the theme for 2026... it's announced tomorrow!

Mercedes Students Explore Big Ideas

Last week, 10 Mercedes College students attended the 2025 Junior Thinkers Conference at Concordia College, hosted by Thriving Minds and Academy Conferences. The event brought together students aged 11 to 14 to explore philosophy, science, and ethics through engaging sessions and collaborative dialogue.

Students tackled Theory of Mind topics, including the philosophical problem of other minds and metacognition, which encouraged deep reflection and challenged students to think critically about how we understand ourselves and others.

In the Community of Inquiry session, students explored the topic of Freedom of Speech, engaging in respectful, student-led discussion that promoted open-mindedness and thoughtful debate.

The final session of the day featured a spirited debate on “Does Love Conquer All?” Mercedes College was proudly represented by Samirah (Year 7, Dalton) and Ivania (Year 8, Barry), who delivered articulate and insightful speeches.

The conference was presented by Julie Arliss, a leading educator in gifted education, whose message of lifelong learning and intellectual bravery perfectly aligned with our mission as an IB world school. Students left the event inspired and empowered, ready to keep asking big questions and explore new ideas beyond the classroom.

Mercy Revisited

On Monday, Mercedes College welcomed Mercy Sisters, Catherine and Patricia to tour our classrooms and grounds.

Sister Patricia was a boarder here many years ago and marvelled at discovering familiar and new locations, delighting in the significant progress and changes since her time at the College.

Sister Catherine taught in the Middle School in the early 70s. She was in awe of our magnificent grounds and facilities and all the welcoming students.

A highlight was visiting 1EG and spending time with the students who asked a myriad of interesting questions about past schooling experiences.

Thank you, Sisters. See you at Mercy Day Mass!

Voices Raised High

This week, we were privileged to host more than 1,600 students from Catholic schools around the State as they filled Gleeson Theatre with song, rehearsing for the Catholic Schools Music Festival.

With a new group of 400 students each day from Monday to Thursday, these students are learning a range of songs, and also coordinated movements  that make will make the enormous combined choir performance so dynamic at the Festival.

Mercedes College will be represented by 20 students from Years 5-7, along with Hailey (Year 8, McAuley) and Justin (Year 7, Barry) in the strings ensemble, Summer (Year 12, Fitzpatrick) performing as a support act twice during the Festival.

Our Jazz Combo and rock band Even Hannah have also selected to perform pre-show on Opening Night.

Tickets are open to the public, get yours today!

Write a Book in a Day? Yes!

Today in our Library, two teams of Middle School students are working together to complete an entire book!

These creative crusaders will plan, create, write and illustrate their books by 6.00pm, and submit them for consideration to be circulated to children in hospitals around the country, as part of the Write a Book in a Day initiative.

We look forward to seeing the final results and hearing about the wonderful stories that these students come up with...

International Students Embrace the Intercol Experience

Our international students embrace all aspects of their time at Mercedes College, and that includes getting swept up in the excitement of Intercol.

This year, we had nine of our senior international students participate in competitions, with Etienne from France (Year 10, Fitzpatrick) winning MVP for the Open B Boys' Soccer team just before heading home to Europe.

Our other international Intercol representatives were captain Yuki from China (Year 10, Barry), Abbott from Hong Kong (Year 11, Barry), Luke from Taiwan (Year 10, Barry), and Jenson from China (Year 10, Dalton) competing in Table Tennis, Lotta from Germany (Year 12, Fitzpatrick House Leader), and Matteo from Italy (Year 11, Barry) playing Soccer, Eric from China (Year 11, Barry) in the Basketball, and Samuel from Hong Kong (Year 11, Fitzpatrick) in the shield winning Cross Country team.

How wonderful to see these students contribute their skills to the culture of our wonderful College community!

Get Down Low and Go, Go, Go!

Our Year 1 students this week received a visit from the Metropolitan Fire Service to learn all about fire safety at home.

With important lessons about what to do in the event of a fire, students asked insightful questions of their visitors, and delighted in experiencing the power of a real fire hose!
