Leading the Way in 2026

Over the past few weeks, our Year 11s have been taking part in our 2026 College Captain application and voting process.

We had an impressive list of candidates who put up their hands to vie for the top student leadership roles at the College. Their final speeches to the Senior School were confidently presented, and well considered.

We are delighted to announce our four College Captains for 2026:

Annabelle (Fitzpatrick), Elliot (Barry)
Patrick (Dalton), Ava (Dalton)

Congratulations! We are looking forward to your leadership next year.

Intercol XXI Update

It's been an exciting week so far in our 21st Intercol against St Ignatius' College with the Shield count currently sitting at 7-6 in our favour.

On Monday, we came away with two of the five Shields on offer, winning both the Open Boys and Girls Cross Country. Our Chess and Debating teams competed valiantly, but ultimately missed out on the win.

Tuesday saw an electric atmosphere courtside at the Netball and Basketball. Our Open Netball teams had a clean sweep bringing home three Shields. Our three Basketball teams fought hard down to the wire, but narrowly missed securing two of their three Shields.

Last night was an absolute nailbiter at the Soccer. Our Open A Girls were unlucky in the end but held St Iggies to a two goal victory. The Boys Open As played an unforgettable game to bring home the Shield. Our Camels were 2-0 up at the halftime break, but St Iggies came out and scored three quick goals.  In the last minute of the game, we scored to take us to 3-3 draw. The penalty shoot out was electric and had everyone on the edge of their seats. We finally won 9-8 - a brilliant display from our players and goalkeeper!

With just three days to go and eight Shields up for grabs, we need all the support we can get to help cheer our Camels on in Hockey, Table Tennis, Music and Football, so check the programme here and we look forward to the sea of Green at St Ignatius.

Go Camels!

Book an Adventure!

This week, we are all celebrating 80 years of Book Week, and in 2025 we are encouraged to "Book an Adventure!"

On Monday, our Junior School staff and students had a very comfortable day, dressed in their pyjamas! A perfect way to launch Book Week, because what's more comfortable than curling up with a good story in your pyjamas?

Celebrations have continued across the week, with guest storytellers, buddy activities with other year levels, author talks, games, and book-themed activities... but the excitement is high as we head toward tomorrow's Book Week Parade!

The whole College is encouraged to dress up as a book character, and the Junior School will be parading around the Middle and Senior Schools to show off their colourful and creative costumes... all our staff and students will come out to cheer our youngest students on!

Mathematics Stars

Last week, we had six teams of students from Year 7 to Year 12 compete in the annual MASA Quiz Night against 44 teams from Marryatville, St Peter's Girls, St Ignatius' College, and Temple Christian College.

Navigating three rounds, which covered Mathematics and General Knowledge questions, plus Maths puzzles, we had some excellent results.

Our Year 7 team placed first in Junior General Knowledge - congratulations Rhys (McAuley), Bill (McAuley), Patrick (McAuley), and Yuan (Dalton).

Our Year 9 team placed second in Intermediate Mathematics, and second for Overall Best Intermediate Team, missing the top spot by only two points - congratulations Jadrianne (McAuley), Sophie (Dalton), and Lucy (Barry).

Finally, one of our Senior Boys' teams placed first in Mathematics, and took out Overall Best Senior Team by a significant margin - congratulations Fyn (Barry), Harry (Fitzpatrick), Hengyue (Dalton), and Lachlan (McAuley)!

It was a fantastic night for students to build teamwork skills with like-minded peers and enjoy some healthy competition!

Well done to you all... great to see Mathematics is alive and well at Mercedes!

Where Dreams Begin

The 2025 Catholic Schools Music Festival is back at the Adelaide Convention Centre from Monday 22 to Thursday 25 September and tickets are now on sale.

Now in its 37th year, the annual Catholic Schools Music Festival will showcase more than 2,000 performing arts students.

The Mercedes College Festival Choir will be performing in a massive combined choir on Tuesday 23 September, so get along to support them!

Year 12 student Summer (Fitzpatrick) has also been selected to perform as a support act on Tuesday 23 and Thursday 25 September - which is a wonderful opportunity! Bravo Summer...

We know this is a fantastic opportunity for our performing arts students to appear on the big stage and we wish them all the very best for a wonderful Festival.

Curious Cats

Congratulations to Chelsea (Year 5, Barry) for your recent success in the AGSA Future Artists 2025 Start Art Prize for your gorgeous picture of two cats - Snoopy and Mooshi!

This year's judge, feature artist and designer Stavroula Adameitis, had this to say about Chelsea's entry:

"These two have ‘Cat-itude’ in spades! The artist’s decision to omit background detail highlights the personailities of the subjects, ensuring a steadfast emotional connection between subject and viewer."

What a purr-fect result!

Little Learners

Recently, our Junior School students took an active role in sharing their achievements in the classroom.

A unique style of learning conference, our PYP students confidently took the lead, guiding their families through their learning activities.

Sharing their inquiries, reflections, and achievements, students offered a glimpse into the depth of their understandings gained so far this year.

Watching them articulate their growth and explain their thinking, not only showcased their developing agency, but also strengthened the bond between home and the College.

It really was a celebration of learning and connection for students, their families and our staff!

Mercurean Award

At a recent Senior School Assembly, Mecurean Chair Chris McMahon presented Ethan (Year 12, Fitzpatrick) with the 2024 Mercurean Award.

This award, acknowledging commitment and dedication to learning, in the face of unexpected challenges, comes with a contribution towards Ethan's Year 12 tuition fees.

Our Mecureans are a passionate group of past parents, whose connection to our College community remains strong well after their children have moved beyond the hedge.

Their investment in and support of our students as they head into their final year of schooling is greatly appreciated.

5 Ways to Wellbeing

Over the first four weeks of Term 3, our Student Wellbeing Team has been busily promoting our 5 Ways to Wellbeing:

  1. Connect
  2. Be Active
  3. Keep Learning
  4. Take Notice
  5. Give

Student Wellbeing Officer, Kiah Wyman, has been facilitating student-led activities all around Campus for students of all ages to practise
the 5 Ways to Wellbeing.

From skittles and hula-hoops, to quizzes and crafting, making beaded bracelets and personal vision boards, students have been getting a lot out of their participation.

More than 100 students have taken part and we have seen confidence grow, new friendships form, and community connections strengthen.

We look forward to sharing more celebrations of this important aspect of our Wellbeing programme.

Film Festival Success

We're thrilled to share the success of Old Scholar Noah Hannon (Class of 2024, McAuley), whose Stage 2 SACE Creative Arts project short film The Comet, has been accepted into two film festivals and received an Honourable Mention in another.

The Comet, which stars fellow Class of 2024 alumni Benji Hughes (Dalton) and Nathan Cross (McAuley), was chosen for the Lift-Off Filmmaker Sessions Volume 7, and the Young Australian Film Festival.

Brisbane-based festival, The Underdog Film Fest, recognised the potential of Noah's work, which received an Honourable Mention.

Congratulations Noah on your Film Festival Debut success and to Benji and Nathan on your roles in the film.

You can view The Comet online now.

Forming New Friendships

Our Year 3 students recently began their Service Learning Partnership with nearby Netherby Kindergarten.

Designed to teach students about the 'give and take' of supporting others, Service Learning encompasses the Mercy values of Compassion and Respect.

The Netherby Kindergarten children welcomed our students warmly and enjoyed making connections through play in their beautiful nature spaces.

However, the highlight of the day was the shared science activity - making a papier-mache volcano that really erupts!

Everyone was delighted to see the volcano's "lava" flowing out of their creation, and we look forward to more shared adventures with Netherby Kindergarten in the future.
